 Workstation Evaluation
 and Technique Retraining

Ergonomic equipment unfortunately does not guarantee that you won't be injured at the computer or mouse, especially if you are not set up properly or use poor posture or technique.
There is no substitute for individual consultations, because people arrange their workstations, sit and use their hands differently. These private sessions help you improve your workstation setup and identify risky techniques and habitual ways of keying that can lead to discomfort and injury. In this session, Deborah will answer your questions about ergonomic input devices, discuss the advantages or risks of your setup, and recommend better products if needed.

Initial consultation, Part 1:
WORKSTATION EVALUATION

Workstation evalutions are done in two separate sessions. During the initial meeting, ergonomic problems are identified and corrected. You learn the optimal adjustments and placement for the chair, table, keyboard surface and monitor.  It also covers proper use of the tools used every day, such as the mouse, keyboard and phone. If your current equipment is adequate, Deborah will show you proper positioning for it.

Initial consultation, Part 2:

TECHNIQUE ANALYSIS AND RETRAINING
Technique refers to how you habitually position your hands the keyboard. Improper technique can lead to injury.  In the same way that professional athletes learn proper technique to prevent problems, computer users need training for using their hands at the keyboard and smartphone.

In the initial session, your risky computer habits are identified. Next, Deborah teaches you safer techniques that reduce pain and injury. With a little practice, they become second nature.  Good technique is not intuitive; and very few computer users have received proper instruction in this area, so this training is a critical part of the prevention program. These lessons are filmed so you can see exactly what you are doing – and how much you have improved when you rewatch them later on!

Initial consultation, Part 2:
The second session is done after new products arrive to be sure everything is arranged properly, and you know how to use it.
During the second session, your technique will be reviewed and refined, if necessary.

Technique retraining is highly recommended, because no amount of ergonomics can overcome faulty work habits. This is one of the most valuable services Deborah offers, because despite dictation, many people still need to use a keyboard, cellphone and other input devices. And many people misuse "ergonomic" input devices.  Clients find this service invaluable because it reduces pain – unless they go back to their old habits.
